Transportation

Getting Around

Metro - Bus - Tram

Milan's wide assortment of trams, buses, trolley-buses and the three lines of the subway make it easy to get to almost every corner of town.

The ATM (Azienda Trasporti Milanesi) operates within the metropolitan area, managing a public transport network consisting of three metropolitan railway lines and 120 tram, trolley-bus and bus lines.

In the Milan area an integrated fare system called SITAM (Sistema Integrato Tariffario Area Milanese - Milan Area Integrated Fare System) enables users to travel with a single ticket or pass on all urban and suburban ATM lines. It is also valid for the interurban routes run by other transport authorities and some sections of the State Railways and Nothern Railways.

For further information, timetable and routes, check the ATM website: www.atm-mi.it/eng/default.asp

Taxi

Milan's white taxis can be called by phone dialing 02 5353,
02 6767
, 02 8383, 02 8388 or 02 8585. Another option is to go to a taxi rank. The wave-down system doesn't work too well, especially when international fairs are in progress and all the town's 4,500 cabs seem to be busy.

Getting to/from the Airport

Milan has three domestic and international airports.

Linate (LIN), tel. +039 02 74852200, is located in the eastern outskirts, some 10 km from downtown. A special shuttle service runs to and from the central railway station (info at +039 02 6690351), while to and from the city center there is an urban bus, the 73. Both take about 30 minutes, depending on traffic.

Malpensa (MXP), tel. +039 02 74852200, is located towards Lake Maggiore, some 50 km from downtown. The special shuttle-train Malpensa Express runs to and from the Ferrovie Nord Railway Station.

Orio al Serio (BGY), tel. +039 035 326111, a smaller international airport near Bergamo, is being increasingly used as an airport for Milan.
