Getting there

By car:

After the bridge of Liberta, the bridge that connects Venice to the mainland, you find that there are two different places where you can park your car. If you turn right you'll arrive at Tronchetto Island, an island entirely used for parking except for an area where there is the Palafenice, the temporary structure of the Gran Teatro la Fenice. By going straight you'll reach Piazzale Roma with two big parking lots: the Asm Garage and the San Marco garage. Both are good, Tronchetto because it is often free, Piazzale Roma because it is closer to the center even if from both part you can easily arrive downtown with public boats or taxis.

By plane
The Venice airport is Marco Polo. From Marco Polo Airport you can both take a bus or a taxi to Piazzale Roma or take a water-taxi or the Alilaguna boat, which brings you straight to San Marco.

By train
From Santa Lucia Station, a big building, which faces the last part of the Gran Canal, begins the sestieri of Cannaregio. Close to the train station is the Ponte degli Scalzi, the third and last bridge that crosses the Gran Canal.

Getting Around

Venice is a very particular city in which everything is done on foot or by boat. There are boats for taxi, for ambulances, for fireman and even for transports. Plenty of Venetians own a little boat to go around during summer or to carry heavy goods but usually they travel by public boats. There are many different lines and many stops all around Venice, and is very comfortable to cross the Gran Canal here and there seeing palaces both from its side and from the internal one. Another funny way to cross the Gran Canal and take a cheap Gondola is the Traghetto, a Gondola. With the Traghetto you can enjoy a very particular way to travel Venice and feel Venetian.
